Salt Creek Recreation Area (Tide Pool)

On the Strait of Juan de Fuca west of Port Angeles (about 2 hours from Seattle), Salt Creek Recreation Area (including Tongue Point) features rocky shores with outstanding tide pools. Easy access via campground and trails, combined with dramatic low tide exposures, reveals sea stars, giant green anemones, crabs, chitons, and nudibranchs making it a favorite for families and naturalists alike.

Salt Creek, Washington (Guide)

Salt Creek on the Strait of Juan de Fuca offers excellent local fishing for salmon rockfish lingcod flounder and Dungeness crab with outgoing tides concentrating fish and crabs near structure and the hatchery outfall for stronger bites. Shore fishing from the park beaches and jetties is popular. Check current WDFW regulations before heading out.

Public boat ramps and the protected cove provide convenient kayak and small boat access to the strait but strong tidal currents and swells require careful planning for safe navigation. Always confirm current marine conditions in the NOAA NWS Forecast section displayed above.

Low tides at Salt Creek Recreation Area and nearby Tongue Point reveal some of the best tide pools on the Olympic Peninsula with abundant sea stars anemones crabs and small fish while the park offers camping picnics hiking to historic bunkers and scenic views across to Vancouver Island.

Tongue Point (Tide Pool)

Just west of Salt Creek Recreation Area along the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Port Angeles, Tongue Point is a stellar tidepool destination renowned for its expansive rocky outcrops and sheltered pools. At minus tides, the intertidal zone teems with colorful chitons, limpets, aggregating anemones, purple sea stars, crabs, sculpins, and small fish. A favorite among experienced tidepoolers; proximity to Salt Creek makes it an easy addon, though it's more rugged with fewer amenities. Bring sturdy shoes and watch waves carefully.

Salt Creek Recreation Area Beach Access (Clallam County Parks)

Public beach and shoreline access at Salt Creek Recreation Area with sandy/rocky shore, parking, restrooms, picnic areas, and trails for walking, beachcombing, shore fishing, and low tide tide pooling. Offers views of the strait and historic artillery batteries; strong tidal currents and waves affect safety so check tide charts for safe beach activities and avoid high surf.
