Kawaihae (Guide)

Kawaihae on the big island offers solid fishing for papio ulua goatfish and threadfin from the harbor pier or nearby rocky shores with outgoing tides concentrating fish near the entrance channel and reefs for better casting success. The Kawaihae Harbor provides full service ramps slips fuel and guest moorage for small boats and day charters targeting trevally and bottomfish when tides bring bait in close. Beaches at Kawaihae Beach Park and nearby Hapuna Beach offer golden sand for family picnics swimming and light shore fishing with calm protected waters and great views of the Kohala coast. The sunny leeward location and easy harbor access make tide planning straightforward and productive.

Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor South (Other)

Expanded south basin of Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor featuring boat ramp piers 24 berths Tahiti moorings comfort station and restrooms managed by Hawaii DLNR for recreational and transient boating in Kawaihae Bay. Ideal for launching small craft accessing fuel nearby and heading out for fishing charters diving or exploring tidal influenced waters along the Kohala Coast with changing tides revealing more nearshore features. Supports day trips and longer stays with proximity to restaurants art galleries and cultural surf park making it a central hub for monitoring local tides while enjoying Big Island coastal activities.

Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site near Kawaihae (Other)

Historic national park site overlooking Kawaihae Harbor with restored heiau temple visitor center trails and exhibits on Hawaiian history culture and the arrival of Western influences including first horses and cattle. Offers scenic overlooks of Kawaihae Bay and the small boat harbor where tidal changes affect nearshore waters and provide context for understanding traditional Hawaiian use of the area for fishing and voyaging. Great for educational walks combining cultural exploration with views of tidal influenced bay activities and proximity to beaches harbor facilities for a well rounded visit.

County managed public beach park known as Spencer Beach Park featuring sandy shoreline calm protected waters picnic tables pavilions restrooms showers camping areas and lifeguard presence for swimming snorkeling sunbathing and family beach days near Kawaihae Harbor.
