Kailua Kona, Hawaii (Guide)

Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii offers excellent inshore fishing for trevally (papio), bonefish, goatfish, snapper, and bigeye scad from the shore and small boats with incoming tides improving action near the breakwall reefs and lava rock structure. Check current Hawaii DLNR regulations before heading out.

Public boat ramps at Honokohau Harbor and Kailua Bay provide convenient launches slips fuel and access to the Kona coast and nearshore waters but strong currents and trade winds require careful planning for safe navigation. Always confirm current marine conditions in the NOAA NWS Forecast section displayed above.

Kailua Kona's historic Alii Drive waterfront and nearby beaches deliver excellent walking picnics snorkeling and low tide exploration with scenic views of the Kona coast and Kailua Pier making it a top tourist destination for fishing families and shore activities on the Big Island.

Old Kona Airport Tide Pools (Tide Pool)

The rocky shoreline at Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area north of Kailua-Kona on the Big Island reveals abundant tide pools at low tide, teeming with small tropical fish, crabs, sea urchins, and colorful invertebrates in clear, protected pockets warmed by the sun. This former airport runway park offers easy access, picnic areas, and calm waters ideal for families - wear reef shoes for slippery lava rocks and plan around low tides for the best discoveries.

Wawaloli Beach Park (OTEC) (Tide Pool)

Wawaloli Beach Park near the Natural Energy Lab south of Kona Airport on the Big Island boasts unique sand-filled tide pools warmed by geothermal activity, alive with juvenile fish, hermit crabs, sea cucumbers, and urchins in shallow, calm basins. Family-friendly with shaded pavilions and restrooms - perfect for safe wading during low tide, though avoid high surf days.
