NOAA/NWS Forecast for Hilo | Coastal Flood Statement

Last updated: June 14, 2026, 12:05 AM

Coastal Flood Statement

Coastal Flood Statement issued June 13 at 3:23PM HST until June 16 at 6:00PM HST by NWS Honolulu HI

...HIGH SURF ADVISORY FOR SOUTH FACING SHORES OF NIIHAU KAUAI OAHU
MOLOKAI MAUI AND BIG ISLAND THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT AND COASTAL
FLOODING DURING HIGH TIDE THROUGH TUESDAY...

.A long-period south southwest (200 degree) swell will build
tonight and peak Sunday night into Monday before gradually
declining through the rest of the week. South and west shorelines
will be impacted by the resulting surf, with south shores reaching
advisory level heights. Surf heights may also approach warning
levels along south facing shores (advisory for west facing shores)
during the peak of this event. King Tides, or the highest monthly
tides, are running higher than predicted will lead to minor
flooding along all shoreline and in low-lying coastal areas.
Coastal flooding is possible around the daily peak tide, which
will occur during the late afternoon and early evening hours. The
combination of the swell, King Tides and the daily high tide will
make low- lying coastal areas along south and west shores
susceptible to more widespread coastal flooding.

* WHAT...Isolated minor coastal flooding.

* WHERE...Vulnerable low-lying coastal roadways, docks, boat ramps
and other coastal infrastructure.

* WHEN...Around the daily peak tides during the late afternoon and
early evening hours through Tuesday evening.

* IMPACTS...Flooding of beaches that are normally dry, some minor
coastal erosion, and saltwater inundation of low-lying roads,
docks, boat ramps, and other coastal infrastructure.

Effective: June 14, 2026, 1:23 AM

Expires: June 14, 2026, 2:30 PM

Hilo, Hawaii (Guide)

Hilo on Hawaiis Big Island offers excellent fishing for papio, ulua, goatfish and threadfin from the shore or small boats with outgoing tides concentrating fish near river mouths and channels for better action. Check current DAR regulations before heading out.

The Hilo Bay Marina and public boat ramps provide convenient launches slips fuel and access to Hilo Bay and nearshore waters but strong tidal currents in the bay require careful planning for safe navigation. Always confirm current marine conditions in the NOAA NWS Forecast section displayed above.

Beaches at Hilo Bayfront Park and nearby Reeds Bay deliver calm protected waters for family picnics swimming paddleboarding and low tide exploration with scenic views of the bay and mountains making Hilo a popular destination for fishing boating and shore activities on the east coast of Hawaii.

Kapoho Tide Pools (Tide Pool)

The once-iconic Kapoho Tide Pools on the Big Island's Puna coast, renowned for their warm, geothermal-heated waters and extensive coral gardens filled with fish and turtles, were unfortunately buried under lava during the 2018 Kilauea eruption. This unique network of interconnected brackish pools no longer exists as it did, though new lava formations nearby have created dramatic coastal scenery. Visitors seeking similar experiences should explore alternative Big Island spots like Ke'ei or nearby snorkeling sites.
