Freeport (Guide)

Freeport on Casco Bay delivers productive fishing for striped bass and summer flounder and bluefish from the harbor or small boats with outgoing tides improving action near the harbor. Public boat ramps at Freeport Harbor and the town landing provide easy launches for bay trips targeting tautog. Beaches at Freeport waterfront and the adjacent Harraseeket River shores deliver calm sand for family picnics swimming and light shore casting with harbor views. The shopping village setting makes tide planning straightforward.

Gerstle Cove (Salt Point State Park) (Tide Pool)

Gerstle Cove in Salt Point State Park is a protected marine reserve with some of Northern California's finest underwater and intertidal habitats, exposing vibrant tide pools at low tide filled with sea stars, giant green anemones, urchins, nudibranchs, and abalone remnants in honeycomb sandstone formations. Campground and trails nearby - perfect during calm minus tides; no collecting allowed.

Salt Point State Park (Tide Pool)

On the Sonoma coast north of Jenner (about 2.5 hours from San Francisco in Salt Point State Park), unique sandstone tafoni formations and basalt rocks carve out diverse tide pools hosting anemones, mussels, chitons, limpets, barnacles, sea stars, urchins, and kelp forests. A rugged, scenic spot with trails through pygmy forests and gerow coves; family-friendly with camping, picnic areas, and hiking - free entry. Best for minus tides - explore carefully on textured rocks.

Sea Ranch Coastal Access (Walk On Beach) (Tide Pool)

Walk-On Beach in The Sea Ranch provides public access to secluded rocky coves and tide pools at low tide, alive with sea urchins, anemones, crabs, starfish, and colorful algae along the dramatic bluff-backed shoreline. Architectural harmony with nature defines this area - trails connect multiple beaches; plan for minus tides and respect private property boundaries.

Gerstle Cove - Salt Point State Park (Other)

Protected underwater park and popular dive site within Salt Point State Park, featuring rich tide pools, kelp forests, and diverse marine life including abalone, sea stars, anemones, and rockfish. Managed by California State Parks; offers interpretive signs, parking, restrooms, and access via Gerstle Cove Trail. Excellent for low-tide exploration and snorkeling; day-use fee required, check park website for tide schedules, parking availability, and current conditions.

Diverse coastal park in Sonoma County featuring extensive tide pools, underwater park, pygmy forest, and redwood groves.
