Natural Bridges State Beach (Tide Pool)

In Santa Cruz (about 1 hour south of San Jose), Natural Bridges State Beach's rocky intertidal zone near the iconic natural bridge arch is a classic Central Coast tidepooling destination rich with aggregating anemones, purple and ochre sea stars, urchins, hermit crabs, chitons, mussels, barnacles, sculpins, and monarch butterfly groves in season. Highly family-friendly with boardwalks, visitor center exhibits, ranger-led tours, picnic areas, and calm waters; one of the best educational spots with easy access. Entry fee; minus tides reveal the best - combine with butterfly viewing for a full day.

Santa Cruz, California (Guide)

Santa Cruz on Californias central coast offers excellent surf and pier fishing for surfperch, rockfish, lingcod, halibut, and cabezon from the beach or small boats with moving tides stirring bait near structure and kelp beds for stronger bites. Check current CDFW regulations before heading out.

Public boat ramps at Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor and the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf provide convenient launches, slips, fuel, and access to Monterey Bay for nearshore and offshore trips targeting salmon and rockfish but strong rip currents are common along the beaches. Always confirm current marine conditions in the NOAA NWS Forecast section displayed above.

Beaches at Cowell Beach, Main Beach, and Seabright Beach deliver wide sand for family picnics, swimming, surfing, beachcombing, and low tide exploration with views of the historic Santa Cruz Wharf and Boardwalk making it a top tourist destination on the Monterey Bay coast.
