San Diego, California (Guide)

San Diego on the California Pacific coast is a year round favorite for beach and pier fishing with surfperch croaker and halibut biting best on incoming tides. Kelp beds hold calico bass sheephead and other rockfish when moving water stirs bait. Tide pooling is excellent during minus low tides best 1 to 2 hours before low especially at La Jolla Cabrillo National Monument and Sunset Cliffs. Check current CDFW regulations before heading out.

Boating and kayaking from Mission Bay and San Diego Bay give access to protected waters and nearshore kelp beds but strong rip currents are common along ocean beaches and the bay entrance can have tricky conditions with swells and currents. Always confirm current marine conditions in the NOAA NWS Forecast section displayed above.

Popular surf breaks fire when swells align with mid tides while the long sandy beaches offer excellent walking beachcombing and wildlife viewing with low tides revealing more shoreline and abundant tide pools.

Popular public piers with no license needed for fishing include Ocean Beach Pier Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach and Imperial Beach Pier. Surfperch croaker and halibut bite best on incoming tides. Check current CDFW regulations before heading out.

Grunion Runs San Diego Beaches (Other)

San Diego beaches are famous for grunion runs from March to August on nights after full and new moons. The small fish come ashore to spawn during high tides best 1 to 2 hours after high. April May and June usually have the strongest runs. Watching is free but catching requires a California fishing license during open season. Check current CDFW grunion schedule before heading out.
